Meaningless Life

Before watching the film Shaun of the Dead in my British Literature class I had not any knowledge of what it would be about, the title seemed familiar to the film Dawn of the Dead however I hadn't seen this film either. I chose Shaun of the Dead because it seems like a topic that one point in everyone's life everyone can relate to, not pertaining to the blood thirsty zombies but of the life that the main character Shaun. The title of the film seemed interesting to me because the lead roles name is in the title right before the word dead, seems odd to do that however while watching the film I know why.

Shaun played by Simon Pegg in Shaun of the Dead is a very interesting character he reminds me of me in some ways. Shaun is a living in the world of robots as I see it and he feels like hes the only one that see's it however he keeps doing what he does and going with the flow. Shaun has very a bad and boring relationship with his girlfriend Liz played by Kate Ashfield, his relationship with his girlfriend is not the only bad one he doesn't seem to get along with his flatmate Pete or his stepfather Phillip. The only person that Shaun does get along with is his best friend Ed which interestingly enough is the laziest and most horrid person around. This romantic, comedy, zombie movie revolves around Shaun and his girlfriend Liz, although the world around them is dying and they are doing everything possible to stay alive their relationship problems never seem to go away. Ed, Shaun's best friend is a bad influence oddly I believe Shaun likes him because of that. During the course of the movie Shaun tries to lead the gang out of harms way and into safety, the main reason for his heroism is that Liz broke up with him and he want to win her heart back by saving her life.

Shaun and Liz maintain a girlfriend, boyfriend relationship nothing much more than that. Shaun is a 29 year old salesman living with a flatmate and his best friend that never leaves, Shaun's social life consists of going to work everyday to do the same thing he always does, playing video games with Ed his best friend and drinking beer at the Winchester (pub), oh yeah and his girlfriend Liz, it seems like she's just along for the ride most of the time.

"Shaun, what I'm trying to say is, I need something a little more, rather than spending every night in the Winchester. I wanna get out there and do more interesting stuff, I wanna live a little, and I want you to want to want to do it too! Listen to me, I'm beginning to sound like your mum – not that I know what she sounds like." (Liz) This scene takes place at the Winchester one night while Ed, Shaun's best friend interrupts their conversation constantly. Shaun promises Liz that they will go out to dinner the next day and completely forgets to make reservations, thus Liz breaks off the relationship.

 Shaun of the Dead makes fun of Hot Fuzz, The Evil Dead and Night of the Living Dead, a modern interpretation would be the series of Scary Movies. Scary Movie makes fun of the horror movies made in the United States ranging from I know What You Did Last Summer, to Scream.Shaun of the Dead was produced in 2004, would not say Scary Movie is a much modern interpretation knowing that they were produced in the same decade however they tend to go on similar levels as to catch the audience. The Office is a T.V. series made both in London, England and in the U.S. that interprets somewhat Shaun of the Dead.

Director: Edgar Wright

Edgar Wright is an English film director and writer, he was born in Poole, Dorset in April 1974, throughout the 1980's and 1990's Wright directed short films some of which are not very well known because they were made in London and not in the U.S.
Dead Right, A Fistful of Fingers, land of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Don't, Scott pilgrim vs. The World, Them, and Ant-Man, are all films that Wright directed.
Wright has collaborated with other directors including directors from the U.S. Wright was given the opportunity to direct MI2-Ghost Protocol. Wright was also an actor in the television shows Look Around You and Spaced.
